Main Campus, 9th April- Sekretariat Perpaduan and Integrasi Nasional (SPIN)  Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) hosted a 3-day, 2-night training camp tailored for freshman members of the society. The event aimed to cultivate independence and problem-solving skill and also facilitate new friendships among participants. The camp was held at the Wisma Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Penang, spanned from April 9th to April 11th, 2024.

The freshman training camp is organized to acclimate into the society, providing them with opportunities to bond with their peers and establish new friendships. This training camp aims to create bond among Year 1 students who have recently joined the association, allowing them to better understand their organization. Before joining the training camp, participants must prepare personal toiletries, bedding, 4-5 sets of clothing, and any necessary medication. Additionally, they should bring personal items for hygiene and sanitation during the camp activities.

Fraternity leader of association, Tu Ger Harng Mathematical Sciences 3 said previous training camps integrated simulated high-pressure scenarios with team-building activities to foster friendship. “The Training Camp (TC) aims to fortify bonds among participants, enhance comprehension of the organization, and offer education in copywriting and event management. TCs serve as crucial corporate initiatives, swiftly acquainting employees with their responsibilities. Engaging in these activities grants me initial insights valuable for future contributions to human resource (HR) field”, said Tu.

The TC incorporates numerous ice-breaking and collaboration activities designed to enhance interpersonal relationships among participants. These exercises foster a sense of teamwork and collaboration throughout the program.

Member of SPIN, Yong Zhi Wei, Communication 2 said her responsibilities included meal preparation, ensuring camp members safety, and capturing moments through photography during the camp. Participation in the TC has honed her communication abilities, and her prior experience in hosting games has enriched the understanding of event management principles. Participating in the TC not only widens one's circle of friends but also enriches university life with valuable knowledge and unforgettable experiences. It adds depth to friendships and enhances the overall quality of university life, making it more vibrant and memorable.

“Collaboration is crucial when facing a problem, we tackle them as a team, demonstrating teamwork and problem-solving skills. By working together, we showcase cooperation and our capacity to find solutions,” said Wei.

Freshmen's experiences and feedback from participating in the TC are valuable indicators of its success and improvement. Their insights provide valuable perspectives on the effectiveness of the camp and opportunities for enhancement. This feedback helps organizers understand the participants' needs and preferences, enabling them to make necessary adjustments to enhance future training camps.

TC’s participant, Choong Moon Yuen, Social Sciences 1 said as an extrovert, her unique role within the training camp is to foster a positive atmosphere and attitude among participants. She takes the lead in organizing games and projects, guiding her group with enthusiasm and energy, ensuring an engaging and collaborative environment throughout the camp.

“I will start with a brief icebreaker to help us all become more bonded. Then, I will focus on open communication, ensuring everyone has a chance to contribute ideas and collaborate effectively. Besides we will strive for optimal outcomes in every task and game we tackle. I gained a lot of knowledge from this camp, particularly in the areas of politics, marketing, and finance, which will be useful for my academic work as a social science student. When I'm working on my assignments, this new understanding can be helpful and inspire many original and innovative ideas for me,” said Yuen.
